Roof Maintenance at Home

How to make your roof live a longer life?

December 4, 2012: Guest Contributor Hillary Ealey

All roofs should be built at a high quality because they are
exposed to rain, the blazing sunshine, high winds and extreme hail storms. So
to stop the roof from becoming damaged and helping it last longer. It is
essential to inspect the building. I would suggest that you examine the roof
regularly to help you notice any change that happens and prevent it.

There are several steps which need to be
followed to be guarantee your roof lives a longer life.

First of all you should undertake regular
inspection. The warning signs of a damaged roof in cracked slates or rust
spots; the shingles are buckling, curling or blistering; and worn areas around
the chimneys, pipes and skylights. Another warning sign of a damaged roof is if
you find bits of grit in your guttering. Dark algae stains are just cosmetic,
but masses of moss and lichen could signal roofing that’s worn out underneath.
And finally just something basic that if anything is missing or has popped out
then you really need to get it replaced immediately.

The Second Step it is best to take is being
alert and being ready.

You should check your roof a few times a
year. You don’t want to check it to many times and then you don’t notice
something which has happened, but you also don’t want to check it minimal
amount because you would not realize if its meant to be like that. I would
suggest the start of every season. Early indications of trouble include dark
areas on ceilings, peeling paint on the underside of roof overhangs, damp spots
alongside fireplaces, and water stains on pipes venting the water heater or furnace.

When you decide you want to plan an
inspection I feel you should have everything you want to check written down so
it reminds you that it needs to be done. And if you want to be very specific
try a scoring system so like I do on my own roof is give it a score out of 10.
10/10 being spot on and nothing wrong with it but 1/10 being terrible and it
needs to be fixed immediately.

The third step you should remove leaves
from the roof.

If you have a simple peaked roof surrounded
by low landscaping, your roof almost certainly stays clear of leaves on its
own. But if the roof has a number of tree’s surrounding it then there will be
piles of leaves probably which collect in roof valleys or near chimneys. If you
don’t remove them, they’ll trap moisture and gradually decompose, allowing
wind-blown seeds to take roof.

The 4th step is clearing the roof of moss.

Leaving moss growing on your roof can
shorten the life of your roof drastically. Having moss on the roof during the
winter causes it to react and make the shingles brittle. Moss holds moisture
against the wood, speeding rot. Moss can even crack cement or ceramic tiles.

And finally if none of these steps help
your roof then the only option would be to get it replaced. If you can replace
it while it’s still structurally ok. It will be cheaper than getting it fixed
when its caved in.

Spray Foam Roof May Resolve Condensation Problem at Niagara Aquarium

Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing and Insulation News

An article we found that shows excellent use of spray polyurethane foam roofing technology...

From: www.sprayfoam.com by Cameron Prior

"United Thermal Systems Insulates Dome Roof At Aquarium of Niagara

Lack of insulation caused condensation, which was dripping onto visitors heads

By Cameron Prior

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – October 31, 2012 – The Aquarium of Niagara, known for offering guests a look into the aquatic life of the surrounding Great Lakes and beyond since 1965, desperately needed insulation for their dome roof when condensation began falling on their customers' heads. United Thermal Systems was called in to insulate the exterior of the dome roof with spray foam.

The Aquarium's dome roof covers its seal and sea lion performance area and was not originally insulated. As a result, condensation formed on the building's interior, causing water to drip on customers' heads and down the side walls of visitor areas.

Larry Ash, Vice President of United Thermal Systems, said, "Condensation on the interior of the roof was exaggerated because there was no insulation on the roof whatsoever. It dripped inside and started to destroy the concrete ceiling."

Ash noted that several years ago, his company sprayed a polyuria coating on the interior of the dome in order to make it appear like blue sky with clouds. "The coating helped to protect the concrete from the interior condensation," he said, "but it still did not stop the condensation from forming."

To alleviate the problem, United Thermal Systems planned to insulate the roof of the structure, which also includes a 14-foot-wide flat "skirt" surrounding the central dome. When spraying the foam, crewmembers were able to follow the contour of the roof with a seamless application.

Since the aquarium has an outdoor seal exhibit, extra precautions were necessary to protect the area from overspray. Ash said they did not want the spray foam, silicone, and granules they were using to get into the exhibit."

Flat Roof Site Photos

Saturday

Roofing Photos

End of season is here and as with last post we haven't a moment to post any articles to the blog so we thought we'd simply share some photos. The project below the boys are trying to close in before old man winter gets them is at a Husky Oil facility in Rainbow Lake in Northern Alberta very close to North West Territories. It's cold, snowy, and the roofers are sure to be thinking about the flat roof they will be doing on a hospital in South America this winter :) Or at very least with our roofers right now in Vancouver, BC or even Calgary Alberta this weekend as it was 18c.

The roof replacement project scope is to remove an industrial flat roof consisting of tar and gravel and SBS modified torch on and replace it with a 4 ply liquid rubber roof.

How Do I Start a Claim for Exterior Roof, Siding, or Gutter Damage?

Do to the recent storms, our insurance claim staff have naturally been run off their feet with inquiries as to the process of filing a claim. Below is a step by step guide for filing a claim for damage to your home’s exterior.

Remember through the process that you are in control of who the roofing or siding contractors are that do the repair work.

If your home exterior has experienced significant hail damage the process to filing an insurance claim and getting your roof or siding repaired is quite easy in most instances.

1. Call your insurance company and inform them of the exterior damage to the roof, siding, gutters, fascia, soffit, etc.

2. If you have any concern with your insurance company or the process of filing a claim, contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada for guidance.

3. Your insurance company will dispatch someone to assess the damage to your roof or siding. This person typically is an estimator (inspector) or a roofer, depending on what the damage is.

4. Remember that the insurance companies are busy in a storm area. The hail claim process is quite simple but the volume of hail claims can inundate the insurance providers. Also, limited trades such as gutter installers, roofers, and siding repair installers can hold up claims.

5. While waiting for your insurance company and repairs to the storm damage you can as possible stop further damage from occurring by adding tarps to skylights or roofing etc. If you cannot get up on your roof or if it is unsafe, call a roof or siding contractor to help.

6. Be sure to take photos of the damage to roofing, skylights, soffit, fascia, flashing, siding, garage doors, house doors, windows, etc. Documentation of hail damage is important. Your siding or roofing contractor should be asked to provide a report if you request an inspection by them also.

7. Remember that you are in control or which roofing or siding contractor does the work. If you have a particular roofing contractor or sider that you prefer, be sure to contact them and have the contractor speak to the insurance company direct.

Calgary Skylights Take a Beating - Hail Insurance Claims Through the Roof

The storm last weekend that rolled through Calgary was intense. Our 24 hour emergency roof and skylight repair service lines continued busy all week with Skylights, Roofing, Soffits, Fascia, Gutters... and more damaged by the hail.

The 400 million dollar Calgary Hail Insurance world record set a few years back may not be beaten with storm, and if not, it certainly should come close. The hail shattered skylights, drove holes in the siding of Calgary homes, damaged flashing, shingles, concrete tile on roofs, and even damaged flat roof membranes which is unusual.

Even the Calgary Saddledome's Roof was damaged in the hail storm:

"The hailstorm did impact our roof, there is some damage, although we don't know how much yet.

"We haven't had to close the building, but there will definitely be some repairs."

The Saddledome damage is the latest in an ever-growing pile of claims the Insurance Bureau Canada expects will contribute to higher rates and deductibles in future years.

Insurance companies throughout the city are continuing to scramble to assess the deluge of damage claims from this week's double-whammy of severe weather in Calgary.

Last Sunday evening brought a monster storm dropping hail stones larger than golf balls over parts of the city, causing millions of damage to cars and homes.

Two days later, black clouds covered the city's late afternoon skies, bringing hail, rain and wind gusts of up to 100 km an hour, taking down trees and signs along Deerfoot Trail.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada says damage claim estimates for the city's two storms are still being tallied and won't be available for some time.

But IBC's Alberta spokesman Graham Laughton said Calgary and its surrounding areas have been home to an increased number of severe weather events in recent years, which could start to bring claims, fees and deductibles higher than ever.

"Every time you turn around there is something severe in terms of weather ... and that will make rates go up."

Laughton explained that most basic home insurance covers damages caused by wind, hail and falling objects, including trees and other debris during windstorms.

JOURNEYMAN TRADES PEOPLE SAME AS NOVICE!

Wednesday

As of 05/09/12 this text is published on a professional roofing contractor's website. I reprint it here in hopes that someone can possibly point out to me what on earth this individual might be "thinking".

" Roof Reports and Roof Repair Estimates are usually issued on the same day of the inspection.  Our repairs are performed only by license-quality repairmen, and not by minimum-wage journeymen, who claim to be experts, but in reality have little or no roofing experience. "

Now wait a minute.
Has anyone EVER seen a minimum wage journeyman? Of course you haven't, because there is no such thing, never has been and never will be since minimum wage, and journeyman are at opposite ends of the trades food chain. It's like saying "that white piece of black paper."

And quite obviously anyone with even the slightest trade experience knows that it is not possible to be a journeyman with little or no experience in the trade, since journeyman meansthat you have achieved the highest level of trade experience possible.

I'm telling you I just don't get it. Can someone please shed some light on this? Why would one print something like this and make himself look so foolish?

This individual's verbal shell game seems to know no bounds.

What is a journeyman?
Journeyman Roofer, as defined by CSLB:
A journeyman is a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision. But, that person does not have a license and is not able to contract for jobs that value more than $500 in labor and materials.
Hmmm. That really sounds like a repairman that is good enough to be licensed but isnt.

Or Wikipedia:
In the United States, employment in the building trades, such as an electrician or plumber or carpenter, usually requires that a person holds a state or local (city or county) license as a journeyman or master.
The journeyman license certifies that the craftsman has met the requirements of time in the field (usually a minimum of 8000 hours) and time in an approved classroom setting (usually 700 hours).

A journeyman has the responsibility of supervising workers of lesser experience and training them, in addition to having the qualifications (knowledge and skills) to work unsupervised himself.
A journeyman is commonly expected to have a wide range of experience, covering most fields of his trade. For example, a non journeyman worker of some 20 or 30 years experience may have most or all of his experience in only residential, commercial or industrial applications. A journeyman however, has a broad field of experience in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Wow, again that sounds like a craftsman that is good enough tradewise to be licensed but isn't.

So apparently, according to the definitions accepted  by the entire rest of the world (with the exception of the wisdom in blue above) it is actually requires a broader range of actual trades experience to be a journeyman than it does to be a contractor. The main difference being that a contractor has an actual license that can be held accountable in the event of a problem.

Top Duro-Last Installation Scores - Making the Grade

Monday

How does DK Haney Roofing continue to receive top installation scores?

Over the past 12 years DK Haney Roofing has specialized in Duro-Last single-ply roofing membrane.  Each member of our Duro-Last crew has over 5 years of experience installing the Duro-Last Roofing System.

John Bell, our newest Duro-Last foreman uses the below tips to help his crew install a top rated Duro-Last roof:

Think Ahead
Before we start any job we go over the roof and make sure that nothing has changed since the roof was first inspected by one of our technicians.  Once debris is cleared, we survey the roof and come up with a plan for loading and prepping the roof.  Our material is then loaded in the areas we are going to use them.

Team Work
At the beginning of each day everyone on the crew knows what they are responsible for and knows what they need to have completed by the end of that day.  If someone needs help with something or a problem needs to be solved we work as a team to get it done.

Double Check
At DK Haney Roofing we double check all our welds before we have the roof inspected.  This way we can catch any lose welds before we call the project complete.  That means that all DK Haney Roofing welds are checked 3 times.

By following these simple tips DK Haney Roofing has risen to Master Elite Contractor and is one of the top Duro-Last® contractors in the country.

Learn more about how we install the Duro-Last Roofing System by watching our Demo Video.
