The question often posed by homeowner’s to our exterior renovation staff is whether to choose steel / aluminum, fiber cement (Hardie for example), or Vinyl Siding?

Some homeowners still have aluminum or steel siding on their homes that has done the job and lasted for many years. And today, most homes have vinyl siding. When it comes time for siding replacement, many wonder if they should stay with aluminum, steel, or vinyl siding or make a switch to the newer composite siding offerings.

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding has drawbacks due to market changes and performance. There are fewer choices as siding manufacturers are offering less. Style and color choices for aluminum or steel siding are limited. Also, aluminum is a soft material and has the least resistance to denting from rocks, balls and hail. Aluminum siding is also prone to scratching. Many of our clients are in the hail areas of Western Canada and as such this is a considerable issue for insurance claims.

Royal Vinyl Siding

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding has become the standard. Statistics show that Vinyl Siding accounts for about double the siding market. Vinyl siding is most affordable and performs well delivering excellent value. Vinyl siding now offers fade-resistant technologies for long-lasting color, choices for high grade thickness for better durability and hail resistance, and adhered foam backers are available for insulating your home while installing your new siding.

Steel Siding

Steel siding is still installed on homes and businesses. Steel is strong and dent-resistant, fire-resistant, recyclable and can be coiled allowing for seamless installation. It is however limited in design and color and is cost prohibitive for some.

Composite Siding (Fiber Cement Siding)

A growing number of homeowners are looking to composites like fiber cement for their next siding renovation. Solid board construction provides wood-like strength and insulation properties, while remaining resistant to bugs, salt, rot, and damage.

Why Fiber Cement Siding?

How to Claim Hail Insurance Damage to Exterior: Roof, Siding, Skylight Hail Insurance

Siding Repair Calgary, Alberta -
Recent Hail Storm in Calgary 2012

How to Process Insurance Claim for Roof or Siding Hail Damage

General Roofing Systems Canada (GRS) is a Comprehensive Exterior and Roofing Contractor Serving Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Roof, Siding, Gutter, and Exterior Home Hail Insurance Claim Repairs are Serviced in Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Canmore, Cranbrook, Kelowna, Vancouver, Whistler, and points between.

How Do I Start a Claim for Exterior Roof, Siding, or Gutter Damage?

Do to the recent storms, our insurance claim staff have naturally been run off their feet with inquiries as to the process of filing a claim. Below is a step by step guide for filing a claim for damage to your home’s exterior.

Remember through the process that you are in control of who the roofing or siding contractors are that do the repair work.

If your home exterior has experienced significant hail damage the process to filing an insurance claim and getting your roof or siding repaired is quite easy in most instances.

1. Call your insurance company and inform them of the exterior damage to the roof, siding, gutters, fascia, soffit, etc.

2. If you have any concern with your insurance company or the process of filing a claim, contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada for guidance.

3. Your insurance company will dispatch someone to assess the damage to your roof or siding. This person typically is an estimator (inspector) or a roofer, depending on what the damage is.

4. Remember that the insurance companies are busy in a storm area. The hail claim process is quite simple but the volume of hail claims can inundate the insurance providers. Also, limited trades such as gutter installers, roofers, and siding repair installers can hold up claims.

5. While waiting for your insurance company and repairs to the storm damage you can as possible stop further damage from occurring by adding tarps to skylights or roofing etc. If you cannot get up on your roof or if it is unsafe, call a roof or siding contractor to help.

6. Be sure to take photos of the damage to roofing, skylights, soffit, fascia, flashing, siding, garage doors, house doors, windows, etc. Documentation of hail damage is important. Your siding or roofing contractor should be asked to provide a report if you request an inspection by them also.

7. Remember that you are in control or which roofing or siding contractor does the work. If you have a particular roofing contractor or sider that you prefer, be sure to contact them and have the contractor speak to the insurance company direct.

Calgary Skylights Take a Beating - Hail Insurance Claims Through the Roof

The storm last weekend that rolled through Calgary was intense. Our 24 hour emergency roof and skylight repair service lines continued busy all week with Skylights, Roofing, Soffits, Fascia, Gutters... and more damaged by the hail.

The 400 million dollar Calgary Hail Insurance world record set a few years back may not be beaten with storm, and if not, it certainly should come close. The hail shattered skylights, drove holes in the siding of Calgary homes, damaged flashing, shingles, concrete tile on roofs, and even damaged flat roof membranes which is unusual.

Even the Calgary Saddledome's Roof was damaged in the hail storm:

"The hailstorm did impact our roof, there is some damage, although we don't know how much yet.

"We haven't had to close the building, but there will definitely be some repairs."

The Saddledome damage is the latest in an ever-growing pile of claims the Insurance Bureau Canada expects will contribute to higher rates and deductibles in future years.

Insurance companies throughout the city are continuing to scramble to assess the deluge of damage claims from this week's double-whammy of severe weather in Calgary.

Last Sunday evening brought a monster storm dropping hail stones larger than golf balls over parts of the city, causing millions of damage to cars and homes.

Two days later, black clouds covered the city's late afternoon skies, bringing hail, rain and wind gusts of up to 100 km an hour, taking down trees and signs along Deerfoot Trail.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada says damage claim estimates for the city's two storms are still being tallied and won't be available for some time.

But IBC's Alberta spokesman Graham Laughton said Calgary and its surrounding areas have been home to an increased number of severe weather events in recent years, which could start to bring claims, fees and deductibles higher than ever.

"Every time you turn around there is something severe in terms of weather ... and that will make rates go up."

Laughton explained that most basic home insurance covers damages caused by wind, hail and falling objects, including trees and other debris during windstorms.
